CINEMA
There Will Be Blood (15) In
this very American epic tale of oil, God and family, Daniel Plainview
starts out as a poor miner who, finding black gold on his land, makes
his fortune and eventually loses his reason. The film charts his career
over thirty years of exploitation and catastrophe, also his
relationships with his dubious kin and with the preacher (Paul Dano)
whom he cheats out of his patch of the harsh Texas landscape. Daniel
Day Lewis as Plainview is a shockingly sympathetic (and deservedly
Oscar-winning) metamorphosis of man into monster. Radiohead guitarist
Jonny Greenwood's haunting soundtrack ratchets up the tension. More info...
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (15) Estate agent Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) lives in genteel suburban
desperation. His debts are spiralling, and although he doesn’t know
that his trophy wife (Maris Tomei) is having an affair with his wastrel
younger brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) he has dark secrets of his own. He
persuades Hank that they should raid their parents’ jewellery store.
Easy target, inside job, victimless crime; what could go wrong? Lots.
And when it does, their father (Albert Finney) is grimly determined to
hunt down the perpetrators. This award-winning story of a family in
lethal freefall shows the 83-year-old director of Twelve Angry Men, Dog
Day Afternoon and a brace of film classics to be still at the top of
his game. More info...
