WWT Slimbridge have some great events throughout the school summer holidays in Gloucestershire including these special days for all the family to enjoy and get involved with.
Wednesday 1 August : Evening on the Estuary
Reserve wardens are real enthusiast for gulls, believing that they are nature’s survivors.
They will lead a small group to the Sea Wall at the Wetland Centre, where one of the biggest gull roosts in the South West is situated, and help you to identify up to seven species of gull with differing plumage.

Thursday 2 August: Advanced Birding
There is a lot more to birding than just identifying birds. Learn to assess fine details such as plumage, weather conditions and habitats to take your skills to a new level. Refreshments included.

Thursday 2 August: Ron Swanwick Sketching Tours
Suitable for beginners and the more advanced. Monthly art meetings ending with tea in the restaurant.

Friday 3 August : Painting from life on the Severn Estuary in watercolours with Ronald Swanwick FRSA
This is a very exclusive and exciting opportunity to have access to an area of the Severn estuary wetlands that the public very rarely get to see. Ron will be demonstrating how to work quickly and directly in the manner of the impressionists. You will be taken out to a place where there are several views and compositions on offer, Ron will start the day with a discussion on choosing a good composition and how to make notes you can later use in your studio to complete your work.

Saturday 4 August to Sunday 5 August
An introduction to wildlife carving
A stimulating two day introductory course to wildlife carving with the Severn Wildfowl Carvers. Each participant will carve and paint your very own collared dove over the course of the weekend whilst gaining expert advice.

Friday 10 August & Friday 17 August : Bat evening
The evening will begin with a brief slide show in the Slimbridge cinema before moving out into the grounds with bat detectors, ready to listen to and to watch out for these tiny creatures. The warden will be able to lead you to the best locations in the grounds, and help you to identify the bats that you see and hear.

Saturday 11 August: Decoy Carvers
A Demonstration by the Decoy Carvers club, who carve life like models of ducks to use to attract ducks to a certain location.
Time: Drop in anytime between 9:30am and 3pm.

Saturday 18 August: Birdwatch morning for beginners Summer Special
Trying to look out for and identify a wide variety of birds can be quite a challenge. Join our warden who will help you find the best starting point and share some expert tips on how to learn and develop your bird watching skills and knowledge. Ideal for real beginners or those interested in starting this hobby.

Tuesday 21 August: Nature Photography on Tour
Our reserve warden and wildlife photographer James Lees will take groups of keen photographers out onto our 800 acres of wild nature reserve in a Land Rover. His inside knowledge of all the best wildlife sightings provides numerous opportunities for taking unique photographs and you’ll learn about the best ways to approach wildlife without disturbance.

Saturday 25 August: Slimbridge Afterhours
This evening focuses on having fun afterhours with children’s entertainment based around the popular Welly boot land, which will have the water flowing throughout the event. Children’s entertainer Tom Foolery will be at Slimbridge for part of the evening performing a traditional Punch and Judy show and making ducks and swans out of origami. There will also be free canoes for the evening. On the canoe safari you can paddle and explore our one kilometre wetland trail (canoes are only suitable for those aged five and over and children 5 to 16 inclusive must be accompanied by an adult). All our hides will be open and refreshments will be available in the grounds.

Saturday 25 August: Animal Antics
An opportunity to meet millipedes, come face-to-face with cockroaches and hold snakes and reptiles. This interactive animal workshop will bring you closer to nature than you have ever been – beware!
