Remembering King Richard III
A festival celebrating King Richard III and his life is taking place at Gloucester city museum between 6th and 14th March for the second year running.
Richard III was King of England from 1483 until his death in 1485 in the Battle of Bosworth Field. This festival will celebrate the king and his connection to Gloucester.
The event coincides with the reburial of the king’s remains which is due to take place at Leicester Cathedral at the end of March. The first weekend of talks feature professors from the University of Leicester, who will present the very latest research on the king.
Other events in the programme include talks from historical authors, a mini exhibition at the Museum, which will feature a copy of the Charter presented to Gloucester during the king’s reign to make the residents of the city exempt from tax, will be held in the First Floor Gallery. A one off walking tour around the city will be lead by a Civic Trust guide, and a choral concert will be held at St Nicolas’ Church. This concert of medieval music featuring the Sine Nomine Youth Choir, is particularly special as the church no longer holds services.
In the lead up to the event, a living bronze statue of the king walked the city centre’s gate streets enticing local people to find out more.
Cllr Paul James, Leader of Gloucester City Council said, “More than 3,000 people visited the city museum for last year’s event and we hope even more will come on down for yet another packed programme of events.
“Richard III was also known as the Duke of Gloucester, and special talks will be given at various locations by local experts who will uncover his life and take a look at what he left behind in our city.”
