Millions of snowdrops bloom at Painswick Rococo Garden
Painswick Rococo Garden is famed for having one of the largest collections of naturalised snowdrops in the country. Each year, around five million snowdrops bloom in the Garden, heralding the approach of a new spring. Staff there are predicting that they will shortly be at their best, with the main Snowdrop Grove in flower as soon as this weekend.
Garden Director Dominic Hamilton says: "Predicting the flowering of snowdrops is one of nature’s big gambles, as their peak is very dependent on the weather. With the warm December and early January our snowdrops are at least two weeks ahead of where they would normally be."
The wonderful display already carpeting the hidden valley attracts thousands of visitors every year from far and wide. Every view, grotto and folly provides delights for the eye.
Head Gardener Steve Quinton is delighted. “Although the snowdrops will be out early, they promise to bloom well into February. My particular favourite is Galanthus 'Atkinsii' which was first discovered in this Garden by estate worker James Atkins in the 1800s, and is distinctively tall and handsome."
