World Cup ’66 – Minute by Minute

World Cup ’66 – Minute by Minute

Summer 1966, and the eyes of the world are on London – the music, the fashion and the football – as the England team prepares for the World Cup final.

Now – exactly 50 years on – music, history and football combine into a once-in-a-lifetime event in cinemas nationwide, as we retell the story of that historic day England football fans will never forget: from the team stepping onto the hallowed turf at Wembley Stadium, to the crucial minutes before extra time, to the victorious climax with Geoff Hurst scoring the winning goal and Bobby Moore proudly lifting the gold Jules Rimet trophy. World Cup ’66 –Minute By Minute will unfold in real time at The SSE Arena, Wembley in front of an audience of 10,000, and will broadcast live to cinemas across the UK on Saturday 30 July.

Together with TBI Media, and with the support of The Football Association, Radio 2 and Picturehouse Entertainment, this live event will relive the unforgettable game from start to finish bringing music, arts, culture, history and sport together to create an unmissable live experience.

Marc Allenby, Picturehouse Entertainment’s Director of Distribution commented:
“We’re really excited to be involved in this unmissable live event and it will be an amazing way to celebrate this iconic moment.  Being able to see the event live at cinemas across the UK will allow an even wider audience to enjoy the minute-by-minute retelling of this legendary sporting achievement along with some of the stories behind it.”

Bob Shennan, Controller BBC Radio 2 and Director BBC Music, said:
“It is one of the iconic moments in football history. Radio 2 is proud to relive the proudest day in English football – exactly 50 years on. With the programme going out live on Radio 2, BBC Red Button and in cinemas UK-wide, we hope many people will be able to join us in recreating the atmosphere of the exhilarating game, through a perfect blend of music and memories.”

Presented by Jeremy Vine and Louise Minchin, the programme will celebrate the remarkable achievements of those involved in the 1966 final, offering an insight into the thoughts and feelings of those affected by the game, both in Wembley Stadium as well as ordinary people up and down the country.

Bringing together compelling match footage, fascinating stories and appearances from football heroes, the event will be brought to life by a combination of dramatised eye-witness accounts as well as new interview material and classic archive.

The story will be underscored by a newly composed live soundtrack, as well as featuring hits from 1966, a year regarded by many as one of the most important in the development of UK popular music. This will mean songs by The Beatles, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones performed as newly arranged interpretations by today’s best musicians, or by the legends who delivered them first time around.

Phil Critchlow, Founding Director of TBI Media says:
“TBI are thrilled to be producing this groundbreaking live event bringing together compelling match footage, fascinating stories, appearances from football heroes, and incredible songs from 1966 performed by the best of today’s artists alongside some of the legends who sang them first time around. This will be a genuinely one-off moment with the significant added thrill of it being delivered fully live, in real time. It’s absolutely our intention to make it unmissable.”

Martin Glenn, FA Chief Executive said:
“We’re delighted to be supporting this event on the actual day England won the World Cup 50 years ago.  It’s one of the flagship events in a summer of activities we’re either supporting or leading to mark the moment – and to look ahead. It’s also the 50th anniversary of The FA hosting the tournament, which involved the whole country, so there’s a real push to get the nation involved.”
