Hillside Brewery wins Countryside Alliance Rural Oscar

In the Countryside Alliance Rural Oscars, in the South West region 2017, Hillside Brewery, famous for its award winning artisan ales, experience days and community work has won the Tourism Enterprise category.

The Awards are the Countryside Alliance’s annual celebration of rural produce, skills, enterprise and heritage.  It recognises small, hard-working businesses for their contribution to the rural economy and keeping standards high.

Now in its 12th year, the awards have become the definitive rural business award to win.

In 2016 the Countryside Alliance received over 7,500 nominations, which were whittled down and judged to find the cream of rural businesses.

The awards are judged by public-nomination across five categories:

  • Local food & drink
  • Village Shop / Post Office
  • Tourism Enterprise
  • Farm Enterprise
  • Butcher

Hillside won the Tourism Enterprise category and the judges said: “This father and son team is inspiring… Their enthusiasm is matched by the stunning setting, making Hillside Brewery a huge tourist draw in this beautiful corner of Gloucestershire.”

The regional winners now go forward to compete against each other at the British finals, to be held at Parliament in London on 22nd March. A British champion will be declared in each category and Clarissa Dickson Wright Award will also be handed out at the ceremony, to one of this year's contending business.

Paul Williamson, director of Hillside Brewery, said: “The countryside wouldn’t be the countryside without quality ale and cider.  We’ve brewed some amazing beers since we started in 2014 and it’s a testimony to the team’s dedication to their craft that we’ve picked up this award against some incredible competition.”

Hillside Brewery is famous for its award-winning artisan ale. Paul Williams is a director of Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourism, the association that represents tourism businesses in the area.
