Ice cool animals at Cotswold Wildlife Park
Wolverine babies, Lions, Lemurs and greedy Meerkat 'snarly Marley' treated to special ice enrichments at Cotswold Wildlife Park.
To keep thier animals cool in this heat, keepers at Cotswold Wildlife Park treated the new Wolverine babies (the only ones born in the UK this year) to an iceberg made of honey, nuts and raisins. One of the Wolverine kits wouldn't share it with its sibling and this was caught on video (see below). The young kit finally ended up sitting on its sibling in an attempt to stop them stealing their ice treat.
The Lions were given blood lollies, Lemurs treated to frozen blueberry smoothies (with mixed fruit) and the mob of Meerkats were given one of their favourites - refreshing watermelon. One Meerkat in particular, dominant male Marley, was so possessive over the treat, he did everything he could to stop the others taking a bite. Photos include him sinking his sharp teeth into the watermelon. Once you see the photos, you'll know why he's been given the nickname 'snarly Marley'.
Chris Kibbey, Section Head of Primates and Small Mammals: "With this glorious weather we’ve all been waiting for, as well as their legs, there’s something else the keepers like to get out – iced treats for the animals. The Lemurs have been treated to fruit lollies made from a frozen blueberry smoothie (with a few pieces of fruit hidden inside), the Wolverines enjoyed their large iceberg containing honey, nuts and raisins and even the Meerkats were spoilt with a nice cold watermelon. As well as being good fun to watch, these treats keep the animals busy and helps cool them down on a hot day. Native Meerkats come from Africa, but ours were all born in England so it can be a shock to the system when we eventually get some nice weather."
