Oh deer – more than just a farm shop at Burley Fields Lake!
Burley Fields, located at the Crippets, at the foot of Leckhampton
Hill, with the famous Devils Chimney overlooking, is home to Steve
Kincart and partner Pam Williams. They own a host of animals ranging
from peacocks which run wild round the farm, to many varieties of pigs
and wild boar who indulge themselves with a stew of over-ripe fruit and
vegetables, giving a wholesome organic diet. Other animals at Burley Fields Lake include Dexter Cattle, smaller than most cattle (but they say the best things come in small packages, and I can safely say the rump steak I had was the best for a long time) and sheep. Chickens will soon move into a huge free-range area, and white fallow deer who arrived in February 2008 from Houghton Hall in Kings Lynn, next door to Sandringham in Norfolk, roam freely in acres of space.
The Burley Fields Lake Farm Shop was set up by Steve and Pam as an extra arm to the business, and offers good quality, free-range meat including beef, pork, lamb, chicken and venison. There’s no air miles, no pesticides or chemicals and no unnecessary suffering for the animals, which is seen far too much in many commercial operations of factory farming these days. The prices are on a par with supermarkets, but bearing in mind the local, free-range and wholesome set up at Burley Fields farm, these prices are exceptional value and you're supporting your local farmer too.
The Burley Fields Lake Farm Shop is only open on Saturdays from 10am till 4pm (or until all the meat has gone so the early bird…) With its unique setting in acres of glorious countryside on the edge of Cheltenham, with carp lakes (where you may be lucky enough to get a glimpse of a kingfisher or heron), is an enjoyable shopping experience where the hustle and bustle of supermarket mayhem is without a doubt not greatly missed. The herd of white fallow deer are adjacent to the Burley Fields Lake Farm Shop and shoppers are more than welcome to take a sneaky peak at these wonderful animals.
Burley Fields Lake Farm Shop, not only offers local, free range meat with organic ethics but a wide range of Christmas trees are available from late November - oh, and Christmas turkeys can be ordered from the farm shop too!
