Blackfriars Priory opens its doors to visitors

Blackfriars Priory is the best preserved medieval Dominican priory in Britain, and was built in the 13th century on the sit of Gloucester’s Norman castle. Currently closed for renovation, it will be opening its doors to the public throughout August for a series of guided tours.
 
Taking place Sundays at 3pm, the tour visits the church, dormitory and the scriptorium where the friars were trained for their preaching mission. The priory was converted into a private mansion house and cloth making factory by Sir Thomas Bell in the 16th century and visitors will see his banqueting hall and kitchen.
 
Pre-booking for the tours isn’t necessary – simply arrive at Blackfriars just before 3pm to meet your tour guide. Tickets cost £3.50 for adults, £3.00 for English Heritage members and children go free.  Private booked tours can be can be arranged by calling the Tourist Information Centre on 01452 396 572.
