Shopping in Gloucester is not only fun and full of pleasant surprises, but the city's main streets which are laid out in a cross structure are pedestrianised, making shopping both safe and easy. The main streets are wide and airy and simply named Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate streets.

The usual high street stores are abundant but Gloucester also boasts a wide range of unique and fascinating specialist shops and boutiques, which are ideal for exploring and possibly finding something unexpected and different.

Gloucester has been very successful in retaining much of its market town atmosphere and the city's naturally advantageous position between Wales and the rest of England means that market trade is still important, more than 2,000 years since it first began.

Located just off Eastgate Street are the modern and ever popular Kings Walk and The Mall shopping centres. These centres are made livelier by the presence of stalls, independent stands and increasingly popular activity days, ideal for family days out.

In May 2009 a stunning new waterside shopping and leisure destination opened its doors in Gloucester. The Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet is a stunning new outlet centre with many stores offering designer labels at up to 60% off recommended retail prices.

The Gloucester Antiques Centre can be found a couple of hundred yards away at the amazing Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet. The Gloucester Antiques Centre is based over three floors with great views over the Gloucester Docks and towards Gloucester Cathedral, offering a fresh, spacious environment where dealers will be selling a wide range of beautiful antiques, vintage and collectables, as well a a cafe serving refreshments.

The city's compact nature and easy layout means that its very accessible, making shopping a real pleasure for everyone. The street cafes also offer the perfect opportunity to take it all in your stride and watch life go by whilst you plan your next purchase!

Adjacent to East Gate Shopping is an all year round covered market which, besides being a great place to pick up a bargain, also has stalls selling traditional local produce such as the famous Gloucester sausage. Situated a couple of miles north east of Gloucester you will also find Over Farm Market - a great place for fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.

It's well worth taking the few minutes to walk down Westgate Street and along Berkeley Street to the Victorian Docks. The Docks area also has its own specialist shopping centre with very individual shops.
