A countryside collection displayed to honour the prophetic writings on nature conservation of the late John Moore (1907 - 1967), a local writer and naturalist. The museum is housed in an historic 15th century timber-framed building, part of a row of restored late medieval early Tudor merchants’ cottages.
Central to the John Moore Countryside Museum is the natural history collection of preserved mammals and birds, nearly all the victims of accidents or predators. We never kill animals for displays. These creatures now make up exhibitions of British native wildlife. Many species of wild creature, their habitats and habits as well as their relationships with people are examined.
The impact of people on the natural environment and the need for conservation are explored. Displays of hand tools illustrate how people have shaped the countryside that we know today.
The museum runs a full programme of temporary exhibitions and special events. Throughout the year there are a series of live animal days, when wild mammals or birds are present in the museum.
