The award winning, all-volunteer run Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is justifiably known as ‘The Friendly Line in the Cotswolds’. The GWR offers a 20-mile round trip, with superb scenery, between Toddington and Cheltenham Racecourse via Winchcombe. Since 1981, the volunteers have restored over 10 miles of line, together with platforms, buildings, steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock.
The National Railway Museum’s famous Great Western locomotive ‘City of Truro’ is based at Toddington along with wildlife conservationist & artist David Shepherd’s impressive ‘Black Prince’.
The views of The Cotswolds, Malverns and The Vale of Evesham are superb as most of the line runs on embankments. The exciting 693 yard Greet Tunnel is one of the longest on a preserved railway and surely the darkest! Pop along and see the driver in his cab, break your journey at picturesque Winchcombe Station with its tree lined picnic area or sample the delicious snacks and cakes in the ‘Flag & Whistle’ tearooms at Toddington Station. Refreshments are also available from the buffet car on most trains. Wheelchair passengers can be catered for but prior notice is appreciated.
A well-stocked station shop sells a variety of ‘railway’ gifts. Trains operate weekends & Bank Holidays all year and selected weekdays during the main operating season. There are special events throughout the year including our popular Santa Specials, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, Fish and Chips specials and dining trains. Visiting locomotives ensure there is always something different to see.
A narrow gauge steam railway operates alongside the mainline on selected weekends (extra charge).
