About Westonbirt Arboretum
JOURNEY INTO A WORLD OF TREES AT WESTONBIRT ARBORETUM
Great reasons to visit in 2011
Westonbirt, The National Arboretum in Gloucestershire is internationally known for its vibrant autumn colour; but have you thought of the many other opportunities Westonbirt offers for other times of the year?
Spectacular spring flowers, the Festival of the Tree, summer walks amongst lush woodlands and the Enchanted Christmas illuminated trail offer great reasons to visit the Forestry Commission managed National Arboretum.
From April to June, Westonbirt is awash with spring flowers; from the tallest magnolias to carpets of bluebells. There are over 17 miles of paths to explore across the Old Arboretum and Silk Wood. The Spring Colour Watch on www.fowa.org.uk, from 1 March, will help show you what’s looking best for your spring visit.
You can sit down for lunch at Westonbirt’s onsite Maples restaurant, or picnic on the Grade I listed Downs landscape; then visit the Plant Centre to pick up a Westonbirt maple or the Forest Shop for condiments, crafts, accessories and gardening books.
On August Bank Holiday weekend, 26 – 29 August, the Festival of the Tree takes place. A new format for the 2011 event will see a focus on fun with an exciting line-up of events; music, food, crafts and family activities; all chosen to highlight and celebrate the many roles trees play in our lives.
The event will include big wood carving amongst many other new attractions to celebrate UN International Year of Forests. This year, Tree Aid are taking a step back from the Festival of the Tree to focus on their other fundraising ventures, so the event’s main beneficiary will be Westonbirt's own charity, the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum. Supporting the Friends with Westonbirt's signature summer event will give exciting opportunities to highlight the charity's activities with our visitors (find out how the Friends support Westonbirt at www.fowa.org.uk).
In the run up to Christmas, you can take an evening stroll through the magic of the Enchanted Christmas illuminated trail from 25 November – 18 December. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening this illuminating experience attracts thousands of visitors. Carol singers, mince pies and a visit from Father Christmas make this is a great event for getting in the festive spirit.
