My Beautiful Laundrette at the Everyman Theatre

Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 October 2019

Presented by The Everyman Theatre, Leicester Curve Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and Begrade Theatre Coventry

“Could anyone in their right mind call this silly little island off of Europe their home?”

Set in London during the Thatcher years, My Beautiful Laundrette tells the story of young British Pakistani, Omar who transforms his uncle’s run-down laundrette into a thriving business. After being confronted by a facist gang, Omar recongnises school-friend Johnny and uses their history to diffuse the situation. As they renovate the laundrette together, love blossoms between them. This culture clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism, sprinkled with magic and joy running through the rich veins of Kureshi’s writing.

This bold new production of Kureshi’s ground-breaking film, co-produced with Leicester Curve, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry and Leeds Playhouse, explores cultural conflict, gender equality, class and generational strife, all presented against a funky backdrop of 80s music and culture.

Starring Omar Malik as Omar, Jonny Fines as Johnny and Cathy Tyson (Mona Lisa, Band of Gold) as Rachel and Cherry. Dick O’Donnell, Kammy Darweish as Nasser, Hareet Deol as Salim, Nicole Jebeli as Tania, Balvinder Sopal as Bilquis and Moose and Gordon Warnecke as Papa.
