Saturday 23 April 2025

Crafts that Built the Cathedral: Stone Carving Workshop

Join award-winning stone carver Deb Harrison in the Cathedral's Medieval Learning Hub for a hands-on stone carving workshop. Over four hours, participants will design and carve a relief tile, using techniques that built the Cathedral 1,000 years ago—no experience needed!

What to Expect:

  • Health and safety introduction
  • Introduction to the stone
  • Learning to use the Stonemasons’ tools
  • Create or bring a stencil design (20x20cm), or draw inspiration from designs reflecting the Cathedral's themes and symbols
  • Transfer the design onto stone using carbon paper
  • Outline, rough out, refine, and finish the carving
  • Take the piece home—or feature it in the summer exhibition showcasing heritage skills and community-created artwork. If displayed, the piece will be returned by post after the exhibition.

Additional Information:

  • Suitable for ages 13+ (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)
  • All materials, tools, and PPE provided
