Brand new event: Penguin Week at Birdland

Brand new event: Penguin Week at Birdland

Celebrate Penguins this Whitsun Half Term from 25 May - 2 June, with a visit to Birdland. Penguin fans will be able to put their knowledge to the test with a fun quiz and enjoy special talks about the ‘waddle of penguins’ which includes the only King Penguins on display in the England and also a comical gang of Humboldts.

Feeding displays will take place every day at 2.30 and there will be a chance to win an opportunity to step inside Penguin Shore and help the head-keeper feed the residents.

Visitors will also be able to see the new artificial rock wall that has been created along the back of the enclosure at varying heights. This incorporates nesting sites for the Humboldt penguins. There is also a sprinkler system for the warm days when the penguins love to cool off under the spray.

“We are hoping to test this out over the Bank Holiday weekend if the sun shines!” said Simon Blackwell, Manager at Birdland.  “The renovations at Penguin Shore are part of wider improvements we are making around the Birdland and we have also just finished upgrading the café which has been re-named Flamingo Point Café as you now have views from the outside garden down to the river where our vibrant collection of carribean flamingos like to flock”.

Find out more about the oldest pair of King Penguins at Birdland - Seth & Missy who have laid their first egg of the year earlier in May.  Missy, aged approximately 37, & Seth, 34, have paired up every year for the past few seasons and always produce eggs.  Keepers have removed the egg and placed it in the incubator for safe keeping.  Weighing in at 262 grams the egg will be weighed every other day to see if it is fertile & developing properly.

Plus meet Spike the King Penguin, who has over 1500 facebook fans and is a regular tweeter about his life in the Cotswolds and at Birdland!  He was hand-reared by Alistair Keen the Head Keeper and is one of the most popular residents.
