Discover unseen treasures in the DHC’s Potter archive.
Discover the Potter archive and celebrate all things 1950’s on Saturday 29th June 2013, as the Dean Heritage Centre officially celebrates the culmination of its Dennis Potter Heritage Project and steps back to the 1950’s for the day.
The one day event will be a celebration of Potter’s life and works set against a background of 1950’s Forest nostalgia and music.
Activities include Potter related talks and presentations; music from the ‘Marjorie Belles’ musical trio and Berry Hill Band; jive and swing demonstrations from Forest of Dean Jive and Swing; a dedicated ‘1950’s Forest’ exhibition, an exclusive art exhibition by Potter’s daughter Jane which is supported by a collection of miniature sculptures by her cousin Maddie Leigh. Also onsite will be classic cars; Lily’s vintage inspired clothing stall, a vintage ice cream van to keep visitors cool during their visit and a talk on transport in the forest from James Bevan of Bevans buses.
Following meticulous work by Centre staff and volunteers to catalogue the Dennis Potter archive, several previously undiscovered items have been found including plays from the 1960’s entitled, ‘The Unknown Hospital Dramas’ and ‘In Memoriam’. The Centre has a selection of pages from each play in the archive which provide a teasing insight into the plot.
Also included is the completed 1978 feature film script, ‘Ghost Writer’ which is a film version of the 1976 television play ‘Double Dare’ which was broadcast on BBC 1 as part of the ‘Play for Today’ series. The beginning of a feature film screenplay of ‘Sins of the father’ and the unproduced television play ‘Mushrooms on Toast’ also feature within the collection.
Three versions of a previously unseen novel called ‘The Country Boy’ have been catalogued, one of which was drafted in 1958 and may have been further developed in the 1960’s.
The Potter celebration day is an exclusive opportunity to take advantage of a sneak preview of a selection of archive materials that are unavailable to the public until the cataloguing process has been completed. A real ‘must see’ for Potter fans.
The Rural Media Company will be premiering their community film, ‘Buried Heart’ and attendees will be invited to join in on round table discussions on the use of the Potter archive..
