REVIEW: Clearwell Caves Christmas Fantasy: Original, Imaginative.

Clearwell Caves Christmas Fantasy - A Perfect Christmas Tree

There’s something rather magical taking place in the Forest of Dean this Christmas, but you have to go below the ground to discover it.

For the past 22 years Clearwell Caves have created a Christmas fantasy deep underground.  Today they find people remember their childhood adventure and are now bringing their own children along, so it’s nice that’s its turned into a family tradition.

This year it’s the turn of  ‘The Perfect Christmas Tree”, which has been created by Heather Holland, a talented children’s book illustrator who has worked closely with Clearwell over the years to create something special. The nine underground caverns have been transformed into enchanting displays which depict the story of the Tuppence family and their attempts to bring the perfect tree into their home for Christmas. But this is not to be an easy task and they call on family and a plethora of local wildlife to help them achieve their goal. Heather and the elves at Clearwell have done a stunning job. It really is a rather moving story that reflects the true meaning of Christmas that all the family will love. The children with us aged five and seven loved it and ran to each display with great exuberance, also searching for their names on the piles of gifts that were scattered throughout the journey.

To sum up, we think that for a family Christmas experience ‘The Perfect Christmas Tree’ will be hard to beat. It’s nice that Santa’s busy little elves have good quality gifts for the children and help them with their choices.  The opportunity for a hot chocolate mid-way through the story was also a welcome one and actually slowed the children down a bit! The market sells good quality items at reasonable prices and we managed to secure a few goodies that we were really pleased with.  Remember to wear sensible footwear  with a good gripand bear in mind that  it’s probably going to be colder above ground than below,  as the temperature in the caves remains at a constant 10°C.

If you have pre-school age children we would recommend that you take advantage of shorter queues for Santa and £1 off for accompanying adults Monday to Friday up until 20 December.

‘The Perfect Christmas Tree’ continues with Santa until Christmas Eve. The caves will be open from 27 December – 5 January for displays only (and normal admission prices).
