REVIEW: The Full Monty at the Everyman Theatre

REVIEW: The Full Monty at the Everyman Theatre

The musical version of the much-loved British comedy opened at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham last night to a full house, performed by the Cheltenham Operatic and Dramatic Society.

The story centres around six unemployed American steelworkers and their aspirations to raise some money, hot off the heels of ‘The Chippendales’. Seeing how much the womenfolk of Buffalo enjoyed the show the newly formed troupe, ‘Hot Metal‘ decide that they can do one better and go ‘the full Monty’.

We encounter their highs and lows as the unlikely act pull themselves together to perform a daring show, the likes of which have never been shown in Buffalo before. The audition scenes are hilarious, but there are also some very touching scenes as the relationships of the men and their partners come into question.

The musical score keeps your toes a tapping throughout the show and the whole cast put in great performances. It is very funny and the audience enjoyed it immensely with lots of childish sniggers coming from some very respectable ladies!

Following the interval the mood had grown into more of a party atmosphere with the audience clapping and giggling through the final acts.

So, if you want to escape the football this week, The Full Monty will definitely lift your spirits. And finally the all-important question – did they?  I think you need to see the faces of the ladies in the audience to answer that one.

The Full Monty runs until Saturday.
