Restaurant Review: The Hatherley Manor Hotel

Restaurant Review: The Hatherley Manor Hotel

After a busy week in the office we were looking forward to an evening meal at The Hatherley Manor Hotel. Set in extensive grounds the 17th Century manor house is easily located between Cheltenham and Gloucester and only 10 minutes from the M5.

On arrival we were greeted and seated in the hotel bar where we relaxed over a G&T while perusing the food menu. There was a good and varied selection of dishes on offer, all at very reasonable prices. We made our choices and were shown to our table in the Dewington Restaurant. The tastefully decorated restaurant created a relaxed atmosphere, which was complemented by its very comfortable, high backed seats.

We were served with a choice of rolls and a large glass of South African rose which had been chosen from a good and varied wine list. It was a good choice on my part. The other half opted for a pint of Dursley Ale.

For starters we chose Tiger Prawns (£6), which was served with a lemon chili sauce and garlic bread, and Creamy Garlic Mushrooms (£6), which was served with toasted brioche. Both dishes were beautifully presented and very well received. We knew that this was going to be a good evening. Our main course consisted of Braised Shin of Beef with mashed potato and a red wine sauce (£17) served with broccoli, red cabbage, cauliflower, French beans and sugar snap peas – the verdict was ‘lovely’ and that the ale and braised beef were “the best of friends”. My dish of grilled salmon with new potatoes (£18) with a citrus herb sauce was also extremely good. It was accompanied by mange tout, asparagus and baby sweetcorn.

Saving a little space for dessert we hit a small problem as we battled to choose from a selection that had more than two that were calling out to me. Being a bit of a brulee fan I opted for the Strawberry Cream Meringue (£6) on this occasion and I was indeed delighted with it until our very attentive waitress informed us that their Brulee was in fact a firm favourite amongst their customers (I will be back!). My other half chose the Lemon and Blackberry Cheesecake with a citrus sauce  (£6). He described it as one of the lightest cheesecakes he had ever tasted and was like a light mousse.

We finished our meal over coffee and mints and concluded that it had been a thoroughly enjoyable meal in very pleasant surroundings, which we would be eager to experience again – we’d take advantage of their great offers too!
