Turning Back Time day – season opening at Sandford Parks Lido

Sandford Parks Lido Opening Day

Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham will open its gates to swimmers for the first time in 2015 on Saturday 2nd May at 11am.  The outdoor heated swimming facility will celebrate by holding its annual ‘Turning Back Time’ day with entrance thrown back to the 1935 price of 2 pence (equivalent of sixpence) and staff dressed in traditional navy white’s uniform.

As the gates are opened at 11am, Cheltenham Silver Band will celebrate the beginning of another season of outdoor swimming in the heart of the town.

The traditional ‘Sandford Sprint’ will take place at 1pm. Anyone can enter this one length (50m) race and following on from this at 2pm our very own Cheltenham Water Polo Club will play an exhibition match against the London Polytechnic Water Polo Club.  This will be a great opportunity to watch the national champions on their home turf and also for any children who may be considering taking up the sport.  Spectators are very welcome.

At 3.30pm Cheltenham Canoe Club will then provide an opportunity for children to experience canoeing in a safe pool environment.

Café Lido afternoon tea
The café will be offering afternoon tea at a cost of £15 consisting of homemade sandwiches and cakes accompanied by coffee and tea. This sophisticated affair will include service to your table by 1930s styled waiters.  Please pre-book your afternoon tea to avoid disappointment.  Call the Lido Café on 01242 222570 to book directly.

Winter works

In the winter of 2014 extensive work was carried out with the replacement of the pipe which runs from the deep end of the main pool across to the plant room. As a continuation of this work, we have investigated the condition of the other major pipes which deliver water to the pool from the plant room. These are vital elements of the pool circulation system. This investigation confirmed the need for replacement and works began in January. All of the pipework for the main pool had been in situ since 1935 and had been operational beyond its life expectancy. This year two pipes have been replaced, one running from the filters to the fountain, and the other from the boiler connecting to a pipe below the fountain.
The pool has been emptied to enable the above works during which time the handrails have been repaired, broken tiles replaced, the slides have been refurbished and the pool tank has been re-painted. The children’s pool has also been painted. Work on site will continue up until our opening day on Saturday 2nd May to ensure the lido is ready for all to enjoy.

Season tickets are available throughout the season and can be purchased with a 10% discount before Sunday 10th May.  More information is available at www.sandfordparkslido.org.uk
