“Calling all Singers” – for a special occasion on Gloucester Day at Gloucester Cathedral

Events at Gloucester Cathedral

On Saturday 5 September Gloucester Cathedral are hoping to fill the Cathedral grounds with song as the 2015 Rugby World Cup Ball passes through on route to Kingsholm Stadium for the start of a pre-world cup friendly game between Japan and Georgia.

At 3.00pm in front of St Mary De Crypt church, a Cryptian Scholar will read out the “Invictus” poem. Horns will then begin to play “World in Union” and the RWC ball will begin its journey to Kingsholm, accompanied on route by the Military Wives Choir, the Ukulele Band and other entertainers before entering the Cathedral grounds via College Street shortly after 3.00pm.

When the RWC ball arrives it will be met by the Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Youth Choir singing “World in Union” at the West End of the Cathedral in the Lower Green. It will then be kicked over a set of Rugby Posts where, (hopefully), Councillor Paul James will catch it before running to the stadium with the ball for the kick off of the friendly match. At this point the Choirs and onlookers will all sing out a rousing rendition of “Jerusalem” that we hope will be heard in Kingsholm Stadium!

As the excitement builds for the Rugby World Cup coming to Gloucester, we would like to invite everyone to come along and join the Cathedral Choirs in an effort to raise the roof off Kingsholm! This occasion is for anyone who likes to sing, either in a choir or in the shower, or simply if you are a rugby fan and want to be part of this historic occasion. Song sheets will be provided. Streamers and bubbles will complete the party atmosphere. Let’s make the biggest outdoor choir Gloucester has ever seen.
