Chedworth Roman Villa’s inaugural art exhibition
For the first time Chedworth Roman Villa will be hosting an indoor and outdoor art exhibition which will run until 4 October.
Cared for by the National Trust, Chedworth Roman Villa is one of the best preserved Roman villas in the country. Complete with mosaic floors which are some of the finest still in situ, Chedworth has a long history of artisanship and creative endeavour. Much of this would have been local. The triclinium mosaic floor which depicts seasonal personifications and scenes from Bacchus' life was created by the Orpheus school of mosaicists based in Corinium (modern day Cirencester).
Building upon this history, the art exhibition welcomes skilled artists and showcases a range of exhibits from canvas paintings to stone sculptures and contemporary mosaics.
The artists include Victoria Harrison who will be exhibiting two mosaic sculptures which build upon her love of nature and the surrounding environment. Rupert Aker will exhibit a collection of paintings which feature rural scenes of the Cotswold countryside. Visitors will be invited to contemplate these artworks in the context of Chedworth’s history and beautiful surrounding scenery.
Hazel Barry-Scott, Chedworth’s Visitor Services Coordinator said: ‘There is plenty for visitors to see in the exhibition as a celebration of art or an opportunity to contemplate a range of artworks, or simply an excuse to relax in a wonderful setting of Chedworth Roman Villa we hope people will find it is well worth a visit. Most art works will be for sale.’
Chedworth Roman Villa is open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm. Entry to the art exhibition is included in the admission price. National Trust members and under 5s go free.
