THEATRE REVIEW: The Sound of Music at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham
This morning over breakfast preparations I found myself singing ‘ My Favourite Things’. Yes, last night I had been along to the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham to see 'The Sound of Music'. Much anticipated the film has always been a favourite musical, which I loved as a child – I was really looking forward to this.
The Rogers and Hammerstein classic was brought to the Cheltenham stage with a talented cast, which was produced by Bill Kenwright. The heart-warming story of Maria and the von Trapp family is actually based on fact and was made into the iconic film starring Julie Andrews in 1965.
Lucy O’Byrne played the young novice nun Maria, and some will recognise her as the runner up in The Voice UK. Lucy has an amazing voice and was absolutely brilliant as Maria. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future. Andrew Lancel who is best known for playing Corrie villain Frank Foster played her love interest Captain von Trapp. The production was filled with a musical score filled with passion and you could not help but feel a lump in your throat during ‘Climb Every Mountain’. This production was first class – the children sang beautifully as well as the adult cast. The whole thing flowed along on a fabulous set, which was obviously well thought out.
This show will leave you smiling and singing inside. It’s amazing how many of the words you do actually know!
The Sound of Music runs until Saturday 23 July. If you’ve not already got tickets then do so. You are going to love this one and it was well deserving of the standing ovation it got.
