The Roses Theatre full of imagination this summer
A long 6 week battle to keep the boredom at bay looms, but parents needn’t worry because The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury has the summer holidays covered with a programme packed full of fun and imagination.
This summer, the biggest adventures are for the littlest kids. Dotty The Dragon (Weds 10 August, 1.30pm & 3.30pm) lives in a dusty old castle and wishes she could join the children playing in the village below. Will she ever make new friends, or will the fearful village folk chase Dotty away? Brought to life by the acclaimed Blunderbus Theatre, this big-hearted adventure is told with magical songs, enchanting music and exquisite puppetry. There’s plenty more puppet wizardry featured in Pandora’s Magical Box (Wed 3 August, 2.30pm); internationally acclaimed Indigo Moon Theatre brings the classic myth to life combining shadow theatre, table-top puppetry and live action. In addition, as part of the Shakespeare Festival celebrating The Bard’s 400 year legacy, award winning Box Tale Soup present A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Wed 31 August, 2.30pm), transporting audiences to a world of mirth and magic, where Shakespeare’s language is made accessible through the use of beautiful handmade puppets, physical theatre and original music.
Being an evil scientist, pirate or cowboy is trickier than Derek, Ernie, and Dick thought, so can the bumbling brothers learn how to stay out of jail and be real Bad Guys (Wed 27 July, 2.30pm)? Comedy Club 4 Kids & CBeebies Spot Bots stars, the Three Half Pints, trip and stumble their way through a brand new comic misadventure, packed with songs, slapstick, silliness and accidental derring do.
Gracing the silver screen will be all of this summer’s greatest children’s blockbusters. Alice returns to the whimsical world of Wonderland in Tim Burton’s sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass (Mon 25 – Thurs 28 July) which goes hand in hand with the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party (Thurs 28 July, 5pm) an immersive fundraising spectacle organised and presented by The Roses’ Young Company. Tarzan is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment in The Legend Of Tarzan (Sun 28 & Thurs 30 August) and ten year old Sophie goes on the adventure of a lifetime when she encounters the BFG (Sun 4 –Thurs 8 September) who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kind-hearted soul who refuses to eat children.
The animated treats this summer include The Secret Life Of Pets (Thurs 11 & Fri 12 August) for those who want to know what their furry friends get up to when they leave the house, Ice Age: Collision Course (Fri 19 & Mon 22 August) which sees Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapult him outside of Earth, and the adaptation of the popular computer game, The Angry Birds Movie (Sat 6 & Tues 9 August) sees an island populated by happy, flightless birds visited by mysterious green piggies. Other animations showing this summer are Top Cat Begins (Sat 30 July & Tues 2 August) and Robinson Crusoe (Thurs 4 & Mon 8 August).
There’s far more to The Roses than just movies and live events so if their thumbs are still twiddling after all of that, they can be put to good use in a creative workshop. Back for a second superb year is our summer arts programme, Blockbuster 2 (Mon 1-Friday 5 August), created by The Roses’ own young programming team, HATCH. These young adults, most of whom grew up with the celebrated Youth Theatre and Youth Dance, have worked with Take Part professionals and artists to devise a vivid, fun and engaging programme encompassing a range of themes: Monster Monday, Toybox Tuesday, Wonderland Wednesday, Swashbuckling Thursday and Outer Space Friday. Witches, Fairies, Soldiers and Ghosts (Thurs 28 July, 10am) with veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company and English Shakespeare Company, Emma Cleasby, is a fun and lively workshop that will take all of The Bard’s most colourful characters and well known stories and mix them up to create new ones.
With so much going on, there’s plenty to entertain and enrich for all ages this summer.
