REVIEW: La Strada at The Everyman Theatre
Well this was an interesting one. I really was not sure what to expect from this performance and having never seen the 1957 Oscar winning film on which the play is based I arrived with a completely open mind.
La Strada is an absolute feast of contemporary theatre. With a hugely talented and passionate cast that sing, dance and play their own instruments throughout the whole performance - portraying love, loss and humour it becomes a truly inspiring story.
Set in post war Italy, this is the heart-warming story of a sweet natured but simple girl called Gelsomina (Audrey Brisson) who was sold to the seemingly cruel strongman Zampano (Stuart Goodwin) by her poor widowed mother. She leaves the home she loves and promises to send money home as she tours the country putting on shows and living hand to mouth on a daily basis. This is a harsh life and things only begin to look up when the pair join a ragtag circus. Gelsomina befriends Il Matto the circus fool who teaches her that she can aim for better things.
The set is very clever and the space and lighting are used to great effect. Sound is an important aspect and adds great dramatic moments. There is a wonderful balance created through the both the musical and physical language which just leaves you with a little smile on your face. Audrey Brisson is totally adorable as Gelsomina – she is perfect for this part.
La Strada runs until Saturday 11 March – we totally recommend!!
