REVIEW: Dick Whittington and his Cat at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham
'A thigh-slapping feast of family fun this Christmas'
The Story of Dick Whittington is very relevant to Gloucestershire as the hero of the story was actually a real person who was born in the small village of Pauntley. Dick travels from Gloucester to London to make his fortune and together with his cat embarks on an adventure which results in him becoming the Lord Mayor of London. However, in pantomime land this true tale becomes something rather more magical.
Dick (played by Molly McGuire) sets off to London and teams up with Tommy 'the rapping cat' (Ben Goffe). They find work with Alderman and Alice Fitzwarren at their Emporium, and as expected Dick falls in love with Alice (Ruth Betteridge). Tweedy plays a bumbling rat catcher who tries rather badly to control the rats that plague the streets of London under the control of the evil King Rat (Andrew Westfield) - cue boos and hisses! There are hilarious scenes between Tweedy and Sarah the Cook (Mark Roper) with all the elements we have come to expect of the Everyman panto. We particularly loved the scenes sets at sea and cried with uncontrollable laughter! The scenery and costumes are fabulously flamboyant and colourful, as always. Tweedy, returning for his sixth year adds his magical touch to the whole production, keeping the children gigging with just his presence, and in awe of his daring circus skills. He always manages to add something extra for the adults too!
Yet again the team producing the Everyman Theatre pantomime have delivered on all aspects. It really is a fun night out and very much a Christmas tradition that the whole family will enjoy in Cheltenham this year.
