Cheltenham Remembers: The Listening Station

The Wilson, Cheltenham

A series of 'Listening Stations' are popping up across Cheltenham as part of the Cheltenham Remembers project during June/July.

Created by Lead Artist Robyn Woolston the interventions are designed to ask questions, share archive content from The Wilson and generate responses from the public. You can follow the research journey so far here  thelisteningstationcheltenham.tumblr.com.  Robyn has worked through various community groups facilitated through Cheltenham Borough Homes, and Change, Grow, Live and the African Community Group taking material from the archives to them to act as a springboard for discussion and creativity.

The ‘Listening Stations’ are situated at The Wilson, Leisure Centre, Cheltenham Library, The Town Hall and Hester’s Way Community Centre.  At these venues we want you to leave your stories too.  They may be about family histories to do with WW1 or memories about more recent or contemporary conflict.  We want to bring together a record of these stories to complement our archives at The Wilson. At each station there’s a book for you to leave your comments and as a thank you can take a set of cards inspired by The Wilson archives and designed by Robyn Woolston.

Robyn Woolston says :
'I've been working in the archives at The Wilson for 5 months now and the objects, items and stories I've uncovered are truly touching. I've also been stretching-out into the community, sharing my research and creating artworks with a wide variety of people. The next step of the project involved setting up 'Listening Stations' across Cheltenham that will allow people to ‘listen-in’ to some of the stories from the archive by reading and reflecting as well as contributing to the project and its blog. I like to think that we are listening-in to long-lost historical narratives that began their journey over 100 years ago during World War One.'

Opening Hours at The Wilson: Mon- Weds & Fri – Sat, 9.30am – 5.15pm, Thurs 9.30am – 7.45pm, Sun 11am – 4pm, please check opening times for other venues on respective websites.
