Carols on the Hour and Christmas Market at Gloucester Cathedral

Carols on the Hour and Christmas Market at Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral’s choirs are limbering up for a marathon carol-singing session on Saturday 8 December when our hugely popular Carols on the Hour and Christmas Market returns.

Aimed specially at the busy Christmas shopper, Carols on the Hour are bite-sized bursts of festive praise, sung by the Cathedral Choirs, on the hour between 11.00am and 4.00pm.

  • 11.00am: Cathedral Junior Choir
  • 12noon and 1.00pm: Cathedral Choir with boy & girl Choristers
  • 2.00pm and 300pm: Cathedral Youth Choir
  • 4.00pm: Gloucester Choral Society

Running alongside the carol services will be the Cathedral’s Christmas Market in the Cloisters and Chapter House open from 10.00am to 4.30pm with over 60 stalls selling locally made arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, luscious cakes and sweet treats, stained glass, jewellery, vintage collectables and much more.

There will be festive refreshments available in the Chapter House and make sure you head over to the Monk’s Kitchen coffee shop where you can try out the new Christmas menu and delicious hot chocolate.

Bring your camera and take a selfie with Santa and Mrs Claus in the Chapter House between 10.00am - 12noon and 1.00pm - 2.00pm and be sure to say hello to Oscar the Reindeer who will be waiting to greet you outside between 10.30am - 3.30pm.

Don’t forget to pop in to our Gift Shop while you are here to find that special and unique Christmas gift. An absolute treasure trove of beautiful decorations and gifts, fantastic Christmas cards, delicious award-winning Christmas mead, and angels everywhere! It’s a small shop offering a very warm welcome – just the place to start your Christmas shopping while helping with the upkeep of this beautiful Cathedral at the same time. Happy shopping!

Due to the overwhelming popularity of Carols on the Hour we are holding a second day of festive praise on Saturday 15 December. These services will be sung by Adult Choirs. Kicking off proceedings at 11.00am and 12noon will be The Caring Chorus Community Choir followed at 1.00pm and 2.00pm by The Stuart Singers and rounding the day off at 3.00pm and 4.00pm with The Saint Cecilia Singers.

On Saturday 15 December you can also enjoy a Winter Library Tour: “Christmas Story” with three tours running at 11.45am, 1.45pm and 2.45pm.  A rare chance to visit the beautiful 15th century monastic library that was originally part of the Abbey and holds a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. Our volunteers and Cathedral Archivist will share the story of the library and answer any questions you may have. Tickets are £7, children £3, under 11s free. Available on the day from the Cathedral Gift Shop or to reserve your tickets in advance please call 01452 229818.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of this busy season and spend some quality family time with us this Christmas at your Cathedral.
