REVIEW: Spectacle of Light 2018 at Sudeley Castle

Spectacle of Light at Sudeley Castle

The Cotswolds’ “must see” illuminated Christmas extravaganza, the ‘Spectacle of Light’, is now underway at Sudeley Castle, near Winchcombe - Explore Gloucestershire went along to experience it for ourselves.

Spectacle of Light is a feast for the senses and this year the theme of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ added yet another magical dimension.
This is most certainly not a trail, but more like a show that you engage upon in a truly unique setting. Allow a good hour to 90 minutes to enjoy the full phenomenon. It’s clever, it’s dramatic, and has been planned to perfection for months, and this year there have been some great additions. The whole experience will appeal to all ages as the theme based on the timeless classic written by Lewis Carroll, captures the imagination of both young and old.

The winding pathways lead you through a captivating story depicted in a way which you will never have seen before - it lends itself more to a piece of theatre than just an illuminated trail. Along the way we met some interesting characters, including the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. We absolutely loved their costumes and they are always happy to pose for a photo, which everyone loved. Keep an eye out for the ‘Smubbles’ too!

This year’s trail takes a different route and works in a figure of eight to take in the Pheasantry (you’ll have to return in daylight to see them!) Half way through you can enjoy a break for a warming drink or hot food. We can recommend the mulled wine (also a good price at £2.50). The location of the refreshment area allows you to return at the end of your evening if you wish.

We thought that the whole theme was excellent and complemented by the historical setting while also drawing in the attention of younger children to this fabulous family event. After a long day at work, we left Sudeley feeling very chilled out and looking forward to next year with eager anticipation. We know that a new theme is being developed by the Director Nic Beeby, and more inspirational additions are already planned.
