REVIEW: A Cabin Holiday at Forest Holidays in the Forest of Dean

A Cabin Holiday at Forest Holidays in the Forest of Dean

Explore Gloucestershire returned to Forest holidays in the Forest of Dean this month for a short break and to find out how much has changed since our last visit when the additional meadow cabins were opened three years ago.

On arrival at the Forest Retreat check in was quick, easy and gives you the opportunity to browse in the shop or relax a cuppa, which is great if you arrive a little early. Dogs are welcome in some of the cabins and are well catered for, both in the shop and with on site facilities. We took our two Springers Spaniels who were on squirrel watch on the enclosed decking for much of our stay - so happy dogs too!

The cabin was warm and welcoming on arrival with everything you need for a self-catered break. The TV provided a central point for entertainment with a great selection of films, cabin information, an easy method of reporting any problems, and the ability to order all sorts of food, drink and other commodities delivered directly to your cabin for a small charge. So, you can cater for yourself or have everything delivered - so nice to have the choice. I must mention that good quality COOK ready meals were available for delivery.

So once unpacked we headed for the hot tub. Nothing quite beats the feeling on a cool late winter evening gazing at the stars with a glass of bubbly in your hand. The perfect end to a busy week. It could pour with rain and we really wouldn’t have cared. Our wood burner was easy to light, and bags of kiln dried logs are available in the shop which can be delivered directly to your cabin. In between hot tub sessions it was very cosy in front of the fire with a good film or book. We saved a “Mark Steeles in Town” radio 4 programme about the Forest of Dean especially for our visit - absolutely hilarious! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKiSUDwHFYY).  When the weather gets warmer the patio is an inviting place to have a barbecue and gas barbecues are available in many of the cabins.

Our next morning proved to be very windy and a message was sent via our TV that we should be careful in the woods and be wary of falling branches. It’s nice to know that someone was being very safety conscious. We did have an issue with our hot tub lid in the wind but soon after the problem was reported via the TV two young men arrived to assist and sorted it out for us.  The wind subsequently died down and normal service was resumed!

There is so much to do and enjoy in the Forest of Dean and many activities can easily be booked from the comfort of your sofa, including cycling, archery, canoeing, caving, adventure ropes and much more. There are beautiful walks only a stone’s throw from the cabins so remember to pack your walking boots and wellies for the children.

On day two we really appreciated how calm and quiet the location really is and the trees outside our cabin became a regular stopover point for robins and blue tits. I really felt as if I had left the rat race behind and was at one with nature.

This really was a fabulous way to unwind after a busy week - getting back to nature in the spectacular setting of the Forest of Dean. We travelled for only half an hour to get there but could easily have been hundreds of miles away! We even got to see some wild boar on the way there!
