REVIEW: Club Tropicana at the Everyman Theatre

REVIEW: Club Tropicana at the Everyman Theatre

An 80’s party sprang into life at the Everyman Theatre last night.

This fast-moving show was filled to the brim with hits from the 80’s and choreographed with a vibrant and energetic star cast.

Young lovers Lorraine and Olly get cold feet on their wedding day, but unbeknown to the other, both decide to make good use of their honeymoon destination in sunny Spain. Both head off in search of sun and sangria with two friends in tow.

Their destination, ‘Club Tropicana’ is a bit of an ‘18 – 30’s meets Hi-de-Hi!’ destination. The exhuberant holiday rep Garry, played by Joe McElderry keeps the party atmosphere alive as the cocktails flow. There is an element of panto to this production with innuendos a plenty and a villainous hotel inspector thrown in for good measure. The whole audience loved Consuela, played by Kate Robbins - this multi-talented cleaner with attitude was quite hilarious. With a roller coaster return to a feelgood era we discover if tranquillity will actually return to the hotel, what becomes of the young lovers and whether romance is on the cards for other members of the cast.

The soundtrack takes you back to a time when hair was big, neon colours were cool and mobiles were the size of bricks. Much of the audience were enjoying the return to their youth but who doesn’t love a good 80’s themed party whatever your age? It was an era with great music which had everyone tapping their feet and a finale which saw the whole audience joining in.

A full house was expecting a party and they got it - the perfect tonic on a dull day.

Club Tropicana runs until Saturday night. Limited tickets are available so book yours now.
