Snowshill Manor and Garden opens for 2020

National Trust - Snowshill Manor

Snowshill Manor and Garden opens for 2020 with new café, play area and stories of its creation.

A completely refurbished café, re-imagined children’s play area, creative workshops for all ages, and a new costume exhibition are just a few of the exciting new changes at Snowshill Manor and Garden this year.

The café has been refurbished and transformed into a light, bright and welcoming venue for teas, treats, and lunches. Visitors to the site on Mothers’ Day (22 March) will be able to enjoy a special menu in the new surroundings.

The children’s woodland play area is now complete with charming animal carvings and a full-size hand-crafted puppet theatre – a perfect outdoor stage for performances big and small.

2020 marks one hundred years since Charles Wade enlisted the help of renowned Arts & Crafts architect Hugh Mackay Baillie Scott to design the garden at Snowshill. This significant collaboration is celebrated in a new installation that can be found in Lower Byre, one of the garden’s several small buildings. The centenary of the garden will be marked throughout the year with opportunities to get closer to nature and to discover more about this intimate Arts and Crafts garden in the Cotswolds.

Inside the manor, the costume collection has always been a key part of the story of Snowshill and of its owner, the curious and eccentric Charles Wade. Fran Roberts, House Steward, said; ‘This season a large variety of items from the collection, will be displayed in Costume Room on the first floor of the manor. The pieces—ranging from epaulettes, waistcoats, and silk riding jackets, to shoes, parasols, and heavily embellished court coats—have been curated around the themes of ‘nature’ and ‘craftsmanship.’ They have been chosen to reflect the power of the natural world to inspire art, and the joy of personal expression through clothing.

Snowshill’s 2020 calendar is filled with activities and opportunities to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of creativity. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/snowshill-manor-and-garden to find out more about what’s on. From stone carving to garden talks or, for younger visitors, workshops to make their own zoetrope or mini beast mansion, there’s something for everyone. See website for dates and details.

Snowshill Manor and Garden is open again from Monday 16 March.
