Gloucester Cathedral launches free art packs as part of its Beacon of Hope work
As one of the first steps in its commitment to enable a programme of cultural and social activities to inspire and promote wellbeing, as well as support the most vulnerable, Gloucester Cathedral is launching two free resource packs.
On Wednesday 8 July the Cathedral will launch a new craft-based activity which can be downloaded via the Cathedral’s website. The Community Rainbow Bunting Project has been developed by community artist Jo Teague with support from the Cathedral and Gloucester Culture Trust. This simple but creative craft activity can be completed by individuals or households using a downloadable handout and step by step filmed instructions. The project also offers 50 free craft packs for those who do not have materials at home.
The rainbow theme is a way of representing hope after difficult times and shows recognition and support to the keyworkers, including NHS Staff and carers, who are so important during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Cathedral is encouraging everyone to donate a portion of their bunting to the Cathedral for display at a later date and to form part of the Museum of Gloucester’s ‘A Life in Lockdown’ Exhibition: Memories of Covid-19 in Gloucestershire 2020.
As well as the Rainbow Bunting packs, the Cathedral are offering art packs for Gloucester’s homeless community. Working with Gloucester City Mission the art packs will be distributed to those in emergency accommodation this week. The packs provide materials and resources for simple art activities that help individuals to process and express feelings, reduce stress and anxiety and for many, provide something creative to focus on at an uncertain time.
The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said:
“I’m delighted that the Cathedral can offer these art packs across our county. At a time when so many lives have been turned upside down, our aim is not to step back, but to step up. Rather than wait for things to get better, our plan is to reach out, embrace our community and heal.”
