Gloucester Cathedral Beacon of Hope Appeal 2020

Gloucester Cathedral Beacon of Hope Appeal 2020

Gloucester Cathedral Launches £1M ‘Beacon of Hope’ Appeal with £250,000 Donation from the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust.

Julia and Hans Rausing have awarded a £250,000 grant to help kick start a £1,000,000 fundraising appeal.

The Cathedral is aiming to raise the funds by Christmas to ensure it can play a crucial role in the local community’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Having been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, the Cathedral stands to lose up to £1.3 million by 2021 in lost visitor and events income. All funds raised will be used to keep the building open for all and to enable a programme of cultural and social activities to help inspire local communities, promote wellbeing, support those who are most vulnerable and stimulate the local economy.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said:

“We are hugely grateful to the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust for their extraordinarily generous donation. Like most charities, the Cathedral has been hit hard by COVID-19. Yet, at a time when so many lives have been turned upside down, our aim is not to step back, but to step up. Rather than wait for things to get better, our plan is to reach out, embrace our community and heal.
This is a wonderful way to launch our ‘Beacon of Hope’ appeal which will ensure that your Cathedral sits at the heart of the recovery across the city, county and diocese.”

Julia and Hans Rausing said:
“Gloucester Cathedral plays a crucial role in the local community, providing support and opportunity at a time of great difficulty for many.
“We are pleased to support the Beacon of Hope appeal, which will enable Gloucester Cathedral to continue to provide such important services in the area, and hope that others in the community will rally round to support the excellent work that the Cathedral has continued to do during the pandemic.”
