Hands on History event coming to Gloucester

Hands on History event

Be inspired by the past at this living history event in the heart of our city…

Inspired by the recent discovery of an Iron Age settlement within metres of Greyfriars Field, the Museum of Gloucester is delighted to announce they are creating a festival feel in this sanctuary behind the museum site with their Hands on History event, on Saturday 2 July 2022.

Bushcraft + living history + reconstructive archaeology; this is your chance to meet incredible artists and experts, try new things yourself and be inspired by the past at this living history event in the heart of our city…

Our Hands on History event will feature:

  • Bushcraft skills including making rawhide envelopes with international expert, Steve from Axe & Paddle inspired by pre-history
  • Renowned living history partnership Pario Gallico will teach natural pigment making and iron-age blacksmithing with Big Benyon
  • Make your own Saxon charm and remedy with TirNaNog educators or explore Roman Gloucester; literally holding history in your hands!
  • Celebrated City Archaeologist, Andrew Armstrong, will also be sharing the history of the site and recent discoveries
  • Using the replica Birdlip Mirror and tales from the Goddess book by Janina Ramirez, there will be storytelling in the marquee
  • Doc Saurus will be sharing the fossil collection!

This day for families and makers will hopefully inspire people to love history and archaeology as much as we do.

Some events require pre-booking and others can be booked on the day. Further information, including details on the historical experts, makers, activities and all images, please visit the website via the link below.

Cllr Andrew Lewis, cabinet member for Culture said: “I’m excited to see such a new and unique event come to the Museum this summer, using talented historical experts to both educate and entertain our diverse audiences, visitors and communities. It is also very special to see different teams from across the City Council working together to share their experiences at this remarkable event in the heart of our city, celebrating both the collection of the Museum of Gloucester and the work of our outstanding heritage partners…”
