Cheltenham Horse Parade - Fine Form Exhibition

Cheltenham Horse Parade - Fine Form Exhibition

It’s a starter for ten as horses of a different kind take up residence in Cheltenham for the summer.  Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum has worked with sponsors and artists to create a trail of life-size horse sculptures to celebrate The Cheltenham Festival’s centenary.  Horses are placed at key locations throughout the town centre, taking you on a walk from the top of Montpellier to the Racecourse.

After the exhibition the horses will be displayed at the Racecourse and auctioned for each sponsor’s respective charity.

On the trail you can see the work of artists based locally and nationally.  The decoration of some of the horses is linked to their sponsors; for example Sam Charles Hodgson has created a beautiful vision of interior elements of Ellenborough Park for them, and Sally Lancaster has painted vignettes of legendary Cheltenham winners for the Racing Post.

PJ Crook’s horses make some references to her sponsors - the University of Gloucestershire and the Friends of Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum.  Alison Little’s for the Regent Arcade is all about shopping and Carrie Reichardt has created a Trojan Horse for her sponsor John Baker.

One horse has been decorated by local community groups.  Led by Su Billington from deepspace studios and Nikki Whitfield from Cheltenham Open Studios, 100 students from Glenfall Primary School and Artshape were invited to come up with a design inspired by the Cheltenham Festival’s centenary in 100 minutes.

The tenth horse was painted by Lincoln Seligaman – also inspired by the races this horse is still looking for a sponsor or group of sponsors. If you’d like to have your name on a plaque by this horse then it's not too late to contact us.
More details about the auction and the project in general can be found on our website www.cheltenham.artgallery.museum
