Tewkesbury Food and Drink Festival cancelled

Plans to provide a food and drink festival in Tewkesbury this May will no longer go ahead.

It had been hoped that the festival, which has been an annual event in Tewkesbury for the last seven years, could take place this year in Tewkesbury High Street.

The borough council had been working closely with operators Grenchurch Markets Ltd to try to ensure that the event would go ahead.

Both organisations did all they could to overcome many of the issues involved with the running of a festival but unfortunately due to the challenges and complexities of such a large event within such a tight timescale, regrettably, the event has had to be cancelled.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Cllr Dave Waters said: “We are extremely disappointed for the people of Tewkesbury, the traders and everyone who has shown support for this event.

“Running the festival this year was always going to be a bit of a challenge given the time limitations but both parties felt that with this huge issue of time against them, it was better to take the sad decision not to deliver the festival in May.

“Nevertheless, the borough council will not give up and officers are already looking at ways in which an alternative event can be arranged for later on in the year. We will keep everyone up to date with progress along the way".

Doug Cotton from Grenchurch Markets Ltd added: “We are extremely disappointed that this town centre festival has had to be cancelled yet we were always working to a very tight schedule and, despite huge enthusiasm for the concept, difficult decisions have sometimes got to be made.

“We hope of course that this curtailment proves only to be a temporary delay and that an event later on in the festival season can be arranged.

“Grenchurch will again be offering its full cooperation to the council and we look forward to an proactive involvement in any subsequent event."

The council and Grenchurch Markets Ltd are now going through the process of contacting all those involved with the festival to inform them of the news.
