Westonbirt Arboretum launches competition to name one of the entrances to its tree collection

THE GATE WITH NO NAME!

A competition has been launched at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum to give an official name to one of the iconic entrances into the tree collection.

Run by the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, the charity that works in partnership with the Forestry Commission at Westonbirt, the competition invites people to name the entrance into Savill Glade in the Old Arboretum. The chosen name will appear on new signage to be funded through the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum and the Westonbirt Project.

Savill Glade is the start of a picturesque journey through the Old Arboretum for many. Welcoming visitors with rhododendrons, azaleas and the Goddess magnolia, magnolia sprengeri 'Diva'; it has often been referred to as a gateway to spring colour.

However, unlike the other entrances to the Old Arboretum - Pool Gate, Dukes Cut Gate and Down Gate for example - this entrance is a fairly recent creation and does not have an official name. That's where the public are being asked to help.

Simon Toomer, Arboretum Director commented:

"We would like your ideas of what this entrance should be called. As part of the Westonbirt Project, new signage will be installed throughout the arboretum in 2013 and 2014 (around the same time that we plan to construct the new Welcome Building). This new signage will be an important part of how visitors will find their way around in the future.
"

To submit your idea, visit the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum's website www.fowa.org.uk. If your idea is chosen, you will win a Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum joint adult membership for one year.
