Contemporary Artists invited to Lodge Park
An art exhibition in which 20 key figures from the contemporary art world have nominated their “one to watch” artists, is coming to the north Cotswolds.
The exhibition, ‘20/12 London Art Now’ will show the work of the 20 innovative contemporary artists at Lodge Park, the National Trust house on the Sherborne Estate between Witney and Cheltenham.
Curated by Armsden, the exhibition explores the work of those rising stars, set in the exceptional surroundings of Lodge Park.
It is the first time since the Trust took on the care of Lodge Park that it has been used for hosting a contemporary art exhibition. The building is the only surviving 17th Century grandstand and deer course and provides a distinct contrast to conventional gallery spaces.
In the year that sees London mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and host the Olympic Games, 20/12 London Art Now celebrates the very best of emerging artistic talent. The exhibition will explore contemporary art practice in London today with the artists working across a variety of mediums, including site-specific installation and outdoor sculpture.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by a day a supplementary talks and discussion on 6 October. Supported by OVADA (Oxfordshire Visual Arts Development Agency), who are one of the twenty nominators for 20/12 London Art Now, the day will includes talks from some of the artists. Rachael Champion, who has just finished a residency at Camden Arts Centre, London and an exhibit in The Yard, at Modern Art Oxford, will give a talk on the challenges of producing site-specific installations. Her nomination came from Anne-Marie Watson, exhibitions programmer at Camden Arts Centre in London.
Jonny Loose, Visitor Experience and Enterprise Manager at Lodge Park said the exhibition would allow people to see the art and Lodge Park in new ways.
“It offers an inspirational setting in which to look afresh at the presentation and experience of contemporary art and with some of the art created especially for Lodge Park we can see how the heritage cared for by the National Trust can inspire contemporary artists.
“This is a unique and exciting venture for us at Lodge Park. We think it will show that heritage buildings and contemporary art can sit together and we hope it will inspire people to perhaps look at little differently at both. We would certainly look forward to hearing thoughts about the exhibition from our visitors.”
The featured artists have been nominated by highly-regarded figures in the art world, including Lisa Le Feuvre (Co-Curator, British Art Show 7 and Head of Sculpture Studies, Henry Moore Institute), Justin Hammond (Catlin Art Prize), OVADA (Oxfordshire Visual Arts Development Agency), Michael Stanley (Director, Modern Art Oxford) and Anita Zabludowicz (Zabludowicz Collection).
