REVIEW: The Woman in Black at The Everyman Theatre
A chiling ghost story for a cold, damp November evening.
Having read the book by Susan Hill I was really looking forward to watching the stage adaptation at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, following glowing reports.
As the production began I realized that this was not quite what I was expecting, as the story is told as a ‘play within a play’ and portrayed by only two actors. However, Julian Forsyth (Arthur Kipps), Antony Eden (the actor) and a frugal set draw the audience into this chilling tale and before long, you are hooked. The two actors recreate the memories of a young lawyer as he sets about dealing with the estate and funeral of the deceased Mrs. Drablow, an elderly recluse who lived alone the spooky and secluded Eel Marsh House.
The sights and sounds change the atmosphere throughout the theatre as it becomes more intimate. You are always aware that something may be lurking behind you and kept on the edge of your seat. Testaments to this were the shrieks from the audience.
The Woman in Black also has some surprisingly humorous moments, which relax the audience only to lure them into a false sense of security before the next chilling encounter. I found Spider, the dog particularly endearing and a great companion for Arthur Kripps.
If you enjoy a good ghost story you will enjoy this production and so will teenage children. It makes a great family evening out.
