REVIEW: Dick Whittington at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Dick Whittington at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Well, The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham have done it again!

Friday’s opening night performance of Dick Whittington was another great success as the trend for great pantos at The Everyman Theatre continues.

We have to say that we thought this was the best Panto yet. One of the contributory factors to this rather sweeping statement was the addition of 'Tweedy the Clown', from Gifford’s Circus, to an already outstanding cast. From the beginning to the end of the show, he captured the audience and had the children (and grown ups) giggling before the curtain even went up. With 'Sarah the Cook' (played by William Elliot) a new comedy duo was born and the audience roared with laughter.

The rags to riches story of Dick and his rather cool cat, with its origins in Gloucestershire, was told with the help of some fantastic and colourful costumes and many magnificent stage sets. The costumes for the rats were brilliant and the sea scene was amazing. We all agreed that the backstage crew needed to be congratulated as much as the cast. This was a very slick, well-executed performance.

In our house, pantomime has always been part of the Christmas celebrations. We have been waiting for the year when our teenage children say that they don’t want to go, but this never happens and they insist that it never will. Therefore, in conclusion we can only say that if you visit as a family you will enjoy it immensely- and that you’re never too old!
