Organisers have today revealed the full line-up for the 2013 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. The programme will feature Cheltenham’s trade-mark mix of international jazz icons, up-and-coming new artists and unique jazz festival performances from some of the world’s greatest musicians. Festival Guest Director Jamie Cullum has also invited some of his favourite musicians to play in Cheltenham.
Highlights of the 2013 programme include: headline performances from Madeleine Peyroux and Van Morrison; a chance to hear some of the country’s best new artists including the BBC Sound of 2013 Laura Mvula and iTunes Album of 2012 winner Lianne La Havas; the new ‘king of vocal jazz’ Gregory Porter joins the Festival as Artist in Residence; and a feast of Cheltenham exclusives including a unique soul-session from stylish duo the Noisettes, and a live broadcast of BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night with Georgie Fame.

Programme summary
Set in Montpellier Gardens at the heart of the town, Cheltenham Jazz Festival is one of the greatest, liveliest and most surprising celebrations of live jazz music in the world.
The 1,300 seat Big Top will play host to some of the Festival’s biggest names ranging from international icons to the best emerging home-grown talent. Sultry songstress Madeleine Peyroux will showcase her sublime vocals and unique fusion of jazz, folk and blues; Artist in Residence Gregory Porter will be proving why he has been dubbed the ‘new king of vocal jazz’; and superstar performer Van Morrison will be joined by his live band to perform songs from his award-winning back catalogue alongside new material from his latest album Born to Sing: No Plan B.
In a Cheltenham exclusive, Noisettes - described as “the best live band in Britain” by The Guardian last year - will perform a stripped back session of sleek soulful pop-songs inspired by jazz and blues greats; and shows from stars of tomorrow Laura Mvula, Lianne La Havas and Josephine demonstrate why the future of British music is brighter than ever.
BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night will once again broadcast live from the festival and this year will honour the legendary Georgie Fame at 70. Fame will perform with The Guy Barker Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra and will be joined by special guests Alan Price, Zoot Money and Madeline Bell for a truly unique birthday celebration.
At its heart, the Festival celebrates the very best international jazz, and the 2013 line-up features some true greats. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and his superb forward-thinking quintet which features Ralph Alessi, David Virelles, Drew Gress and Eric McPherson, will present music from Spirit Fiction, his Grammy-nominated Blue Note debut; six-time Grammy Award-winning vibraphonist Gary Burton will present his latest group comprised of guitar protégée Julian Lage, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Antonio Sanchez; trumpeter Dave Douglas will be bringing his quintet and guest vocalist Heather Masse to perform material from his beautiful, heartfelt album Be Still and Mike Stern, Dave Weckl and Tom Kennedy will be on stage together as part of the Mike Stern and Bill Evans Band.
Mercury Music award nominees Roller Trio will feature in a double bill with Polar Bear, and Seb Rochford of Polar Bear will also be appearing with Sons of Kemet, a post-jazz ensemble that features saxist/clarinettist Shabaka Hutchings, tuba virtuoso Oren Marshall and the stunning double-drum team of Tom Skinner and Rochford. The Edition Records Quartet, an exciting new Anglo-Norwegian collaboration which will feature Dave Stapleton, Neil Yates, Marius Neset and Daniel Herskedal will showcase music from their hotly-tipped debut album, whilst revered composer and band leader Mike Gibbs and his stellar 12-piece ensemble led by keyboardist Hans Koller are also set to entertain the Cheltenham audiences. Superb Latin jazz pianist and composer Alex Wilson will present a band drawn from his Mali Latino project, awarded a ‘Top of the World’ accolade by Songlines Magazine.
Rising star Natalie Duncan is among a host of outstanding vocalists performing this year, with Claire Martin’s take on the great American songbook, the much-loved Joe Stilgoe and purveyors of ‘circus swing’ Gabby Young and Other Animals also bringing their unique shows to Cheltenham.
The Festival will once again take place in Montpellier Gardens in the heart of Cheltenham. The tented festival village will feature a special festival cinema, 1,300 seat Big Top, which will play host to some of the Festival's biggest names and the 600 seat Jazz Arena which welcomes established acts and emerging artists. In addition, concerts will also take place in the beautiful Parabola Arts Centre and The Daffodil, a stunning art deco restaurant, both just minutes from the main festival site.
As well as welcoming some of the world's greatest jazz musicians, the site in Montpellier Gardens will be the place to soak up an outstanding festival atmosphere. With free outdoor music, a selection of food and drink stall, fun family activities and a host of talks and workshops which explore the music industry – it will be the perfect place to spend the Bank Holiday weekend.
Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2013 runs from 1-6 May and will take place at Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham.
