Turning Back Time Day – Sandford Parks Lido opening day
Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham will open its gates to swimmers for the first time in 2013 on Saturday 4th May at 11am. The outdoor heated swimming facility will celebrate by holding its annual ‘Turning Back Time’ day with entrance thrown back to the 1935 price of 2 pence (equivalent of sixpence) and staff dressed in traditional navy white’s uniform.
Cheltenham Silver Band will again entertain as the gates open at 11am followed by Cheltenham Canoe Club providing an opportunity for young and old to try canoeing in the main pool at midday. At 2pm we will hold our traditional one length race open to all competitors of all abilities.
Then at 3pm we are excited to announce that Cheltenham Water Polo Club who this year won the British Water Polo League will be playing an exhibition match against the Welsh National team. This will be a great opportunity to watch the national champions on their home turf and also for any children who may be considering taking up the sport. Spectators are very welcome.
This will also be the first chance for everyone to take a dip in the 25C water of the 50m main pool or 27C water of the children’s pool.
A lot of work has been carried out over the winter to make the site ready for another busy summer and this year we are updating one of our display boards in the reception area. This is a picture board which also includes attendance figures for each season going back to 1943. We have included a lot of imagery on this board but have a few spaces left. We would like for these spaces to be filled by new images from the general lido going public. These photographs can be from 1935 – 2012 and the best three will be included on our new display board. Lido chief executive Julie Sargent says: "We can't wait to get going now. The warm weather is getting everyone excited and season tickets are selling really well”.
Season tickets are available throughout the season and can be purchased with a 10% discount before the 5th May.
