A Beautiful Thread: Thomas Hardy in Words and Music, Featuring Anton Lesser

‘I shall astonish you all’

Following the sold-out success of Red Sky at Sunrise – Laurie Lee in Words & Music, Hambletts and Orchestra of the Swan return to celebrate Thomas Hardy through his own words, poetry, novels, and the music he cherished.

Starring acclaimed actor Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall, Endeavour), A Beautiful Thread (produced by Hambletts) intertwines Hardy’s dramatic life with his poetic and literary masterpieces, including Far From the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and Jude the Obscure.

Hardy’s works are rich with musicality, and the Swan’s Artistic Director, David Le Page, has curated a programme of exquisite beauty. Inspired by Mellstock folk bands, it blends West Gallery Music from 1840s village churches with compositions by Holst, Purcell, and contemporary folk. Written by Deirdre Shields (Red Sky at Sunrise: Laurie Lee in Words and Music), with Music Direction by David Le Page and directed by Judy Reaves.
