Stained Glass Making Workshop at Gloucester Cathedral

Saturday 7 June 2025

Crafts that Built the Cathedral: Stained Glass Making Workshop

Join Cathy Steed, an experienced local stained glass artist, for a full-day workshop in the medieval Learning Hub at Gloucester Cathedral. This hands-on experience is ideal for beginners eager to discover the artistry and heritage of leaded stained glass.

Participants will craft their own stained glass panel, taking inspiration from the shields in the Great East Window. With four designs to choose from, attendees will learn essential techniques, including:

  • Selecting a design and glass
  • Cutting and shaping glass
  • Fitting lead and assembling the piece
  • Soldering joins and securing hanging loops
  • Strengthening with leaded-light cement
  • Cleaning and polishing the final artwork

The workshop lasts 6.5 hours, plus a 30-minute lunch break—attendees are encouraged to bring a packed lunch. At the end of the session, participants can take their artwork home or have it displayed in Gloucester Cathedral’s summer exhibition, with pieces returned by post afterward.

Health & Safety Guidelines:

  • Suitable for complete beginners aged 18+
  • Protective gloves, masks, and eyewear provided
  • Lead is a toxic substance—pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should not handle lead
  • Participants must wear closed shoes and avoid loose clothing or jewellery
  • The workshop space is not wheelchair accessible due to the historic nature of the building
