Step Back in Time: School Life in the Early 1900s
This engaging summer holiday session is perfect for children curious about life over a century ago. Visitors will explore what school was really like in the early 1900s, uncovering how children were taught, what they learned, and why school attendance was often patchy.
At the heart of the session is a fascinating school log book from Broadwell School in the Forest of Dean, covering the years 1890 to 1909. This diary-style record captures the daily workings of the school, which opened in 1863 and closed in 1977. The book chronicles everything from lessons and pupil behaviour to illnesses, holidays, inspections, and even visits from the local vicar.
Insightful, moving, and sometimes amusing, this first-hand account offers a vivid picture of childhood and education at the turn of the 19th century—an ideal activity for families and young historians alike.
