English Symphony Orchestra: Sibelius & Rachmaninoff

Friday 19 September 2025

Cheltenham Town Hall welcomes a powerful opening to the season with two masterpieces born from personal struggle and triumph.

The programme features Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No.4 in A minor, Op.64, a deeply introspective work shaped by the composer’s battle with cancer, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op.18, a radiant triumph that emerged after his recovery from a creative crisis. This concerto, celebrated as one of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire, remains a timeless audience favourite.

The evening will be conducted by Kenneth Woods, with internationally acclaimed pianist Freddy Kempf taking centre stage for Rachmaninoff’s enduring masterpiece.

This concert promises an unforgettable start to the season, combining emotional depth with dazzling artistry.
