British Big Cats – The Art & The Science Exhibition at The Dean Heritage Centre
Thursday 2 April – BH Monday 4 May 2026
British Big Cats – The Art & The Science Exhibition comes to the Dean Heritage Centre this spring, combining striking artwork with compelling scientific research and hands-on family activities.
This fascinating exhibition explores the growing evidence behind British big cats, once dismissed as folklore but now supported by DNA findings and tooth-mark analysis on animal bones. Visitors are invited to delve into the art, craft, tracking and science surrounding these elusive creatures, learning how former exotic pets may now be stealthy deer stalkers roaming Britain’s forests.
The gallery will showcase artwork depicting black panthers, lynx and pumas as described by witnesses, alongside contributions from visiting artists and big cat witnesses. A research briefing from the Royal Agricultural University adds scientific insight, while regional investigators will be available to discuss tracks, signs and reported sightings.
Over the May Bank Holiday weekend, mural artist Rob Amos will be creating live British big cat artwork from 2–4 May. Throughout the exhibition period, local artists and craft specialists are also invited to contribute their own interpretations of the legendary Dean Panthers.
This immersive exhibition offers an engaging day out in the Forest of Dean, blending creativity, wildlife mystery and cutting-edge research for visitors of all ages.
