English Symphony Orchestra: The Romantics
Thursday 22 April 2027
English Symphony Orchestra: The Romantics brings an evening of sweeping melodies and orchestral drama to Cheltenham Town Hall, with the horn taking centre stage throughout the programme.
Conducted by Kenneth Woods, the concert opens with the magical Prelude to Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, setting the scene for the composer's much-loved operatic fairy tale.
Acclaimed horn player Ben Goldscheider then joins the English Symphony Orchestra for Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1, a dazzling showcase for one of the orchestra's most evocative instruments.
After the interval comes Bruckner's magnificent Symphony No. 4. Nicknamed 'The Romantic', the symphony combines expansive melodies and rich orchestral drama, with the horn playing a particularly prominent role throughout.
Programme:
- Humperdinck – Hansel and Gretel Prelude
- Richard Strauss – Horn Concerto No. 1
- Bruckner – Symphony No. 4 'Romantic'
